Alphabet Avatars automatically generates colorful letter-based avatars for users based on their name initials. Instead of showing the generic gray person silhouette for users without Gravatar accounts, each user gets a vibrant circular avatar with their initials on a uniquely colored background. Colors are generated consistently based on the username so the same user always gets the same color. This creates a more personalized and visually appealing user list, comment section, and author display without requiring users to upload photos or create Gravatar accounts. The avatars are generated server-side as SVG for crisp display at any size.

Does this replace Gravatar completely?

This provides a fallback when users do not have Gravatar images. If a user has a Gravatar, it will be used. Alphabet avatars appear only when no Gravatar exists.

Can users still upload custom avatars?

Yes, this module provides the fallback. If you also enable Local User Avatar module, users can upload custom images which will take priority over the generated letter avatar.

How are the colors determined?

Colors are generated from a hash of the username, ensuring the same user always gets the same color. The algorithm uses a curated palette of visually distinct, accessible colors.
